The Origin of Diamond Cutting

It is not clear when, where and who made the first started cutting diamonds. It is believed that the first diamond cutting styles originated from India. It was however, only limited to chipping or grinding. Also in ancient times diamonds were valued more for their magical and mythical properties hence modifying the natural state of a diamond in any way would alter it's magical properties and render it useless. Therefore for many years’ kings, courtiers, noblemen wore raw diamonds. At the most it was attempted to get flat faces on diamonds. It is thought that the early diamond cutting styles originated in Europe. The European traders came to India for its diamond treasures and would transport diamonds from the Golconda Mines to Europe where it would be cut and ultimately parcelled back to India and made a part of the kings and noblemen’s treasury.
Diamond Myth
Diamonds have been involved in a lot of tales since they have been discovered. Medieval knights wore uncut diamonds on their armor because it was believed that they could make a person invincible. This was probably because of the hardness of the gem. There are legends of a diamond that could reveal the guilt or innocence of an accused person. It was also believed Diamonds could also drive away evil spirits, and in the days when gems were believed to cure disease and ill fortune, it was believed diamonds could amplify the magical powers of other stones a person also wore.
Throughout the world, diamonds have been associated with virtue, purity, power, strength, wealth and love. Not surprisingly, diamonds have also been associated with sex, too. So it was obvious diamonds becoming a contemporary symbol of love - diamond wedding rings have been popular for hundreds of years. They are thought to ensure faithfulness and make emotional bonds stronger. They are the preferred gift for all manner of romantic occasions nowadays.
There is one important point to the awesome effect of diamonds: the magic was lost if the stone was acquired by purchase. However, it would convey its power to the recipient, when found or given as a gift. That is the reason it is such a popular gift between lovers.
