Five Ways to Make a Diamond Look Larger

Main Index

Pay Attention to Diamond Cut, Shape & Setting

If you can’t buy a really big stone then relax, we can help you enlarge your diamond from its actual size. No, we won’t be actually making it bigger, but there are several ways to make a diamond appear larger than it actually is. The cut, setting, and shape of the diamond all have an impact on its apparent size.

Here are 5 techniques you can use to buy a diamond that looks larger than its true carat weight.
  1. Go for Fancy Shaped Diamonds: Diamonds that are not the regular shapes usually look larger than round diamonds of equal weight, especially diamonds with elongated shapes, such as the marquise, oval and pear.

  2. Opt for a Pavé Setting: A pavé setting looks like a continuous layer of diamonds, but is actually made up of tiny diamonds embedded side by side into little holes, their surfaces nearly level with the setting. Tiny blobs are crafted from the surrounding metal to hold the diamonds in place.

It gives the impression of more diamonds and makes them look larger than they actually are. The only problem is elaborate pavé settings can be costly, so at times it is cheaper to buy a bigger diamond!

  3. Illusion Settings:In an Illusion setting the diamond is mounted to a shiny mirror-like plate before being set into the band, making it look bigger, and also enhancing the sparkle.

The disadvantages to this sort of mounting are that it’s more difficult to repair.

  4. Use Side Stones on your setting:Tiny diamonds set into the band on either side of a main stone may not make the central diamond look bigger, but can give a ring more stylish zing.

  5. Select a Bezel Set Diamond: Go for a diamond in a bezel setting, where the gem is encircled by the rim. White gold or platinum will merge with and boost the aura of a white diamond, making it appear bigger. A golden yellow bezel setting can give a yellowish tone to the diamond.
Parting Words: All that glitters are not Shallow Cut Diamonds

Shallow cut Diamonds (not as deep as they ideally should be) appear larger than the same size stones with a more regular cut, but what you gain in size you lose in sparkle. Light traveling through a shallow cut tends to go out the back instead of being reflected back in the direction of the viewer and hence appear sparkling.
